SAN JOSE GUN CONTROL PROPOSALS

On June 29, 2021, in response to the VTA mass shooting, the San Jose City Council approved nine gun related ordinance proposals for review by the city attorney and staff.  These proposals will be voted upon by the Council for implementation as soon as September 2021.

Five of these proposals authored by Mayor Sam Liccardo, Vice-Mayor Chappie Jones, Councilmembers Raul Peralez, David Cohen, and Magdalena Carrasco are aimed squarely at punishing legal gun owners instead of identifying the underlying causes of violence in our city and addressing those issues to stop rising crime rates. Three of the proposals are duplicates of existing felony laws, and at least five of the policies are unconstitutional.  Not one of them will prevent gun violence in our city.

In their joint memorandum, the five councilmembers admit that, “none of these proposals will magically prevent all horrific mass shootings.”
